Philippines
First Philippines sculptures were primitive made with materials such as stone and clay. Sculptures were very generic and limited to religion and daily life. Moving on to ethnic sculpture traditional media of wood and stone were used by carving, molding using clays and casting when using metals. The transition of sculpture movements in the Philippines from primitive to the modern ones were influenced by foreign cultures and internal evolution.
Filipino's sculptors started becoming prominent in the 19th century art movement and reach it's peak with Guillermo Tolentino. Many of his sculptures are renowned worldwide. His student, Napoleon Abueva also caused a stir in the arts industry with his sculptures. "One of the latest artistic movements in Filipino sculptures is the modernist movement. This movement has had at least three generations. Michael Cacnio belongs to the third generation of the Filipino modernist movement" (Filipino Sculptures, para. 2) with Abueva being the second.
